Even so, the slithering machinations of his servant Grima Wormtongue allows the fallen wizard Saruman to subvert and poison the king's mind, for a time plunging Rohan into darkness and despair. With the intervention of Gandalf, Theoden was exorcised of the dark wizard's influence, restored to health and soundness of spirit. Wormtongue was banished for his treachery as the renewed King could once again lead his people with wisdom and bravery.
